Welcome to 8th grade Science. My name is Heather Garcia and I am so excited for this school year! I have been teaching for 13 years. I was a long term sub and then a paraprofessional where I was encouraged to get my teaching certificate. I taught elementary school, third and fourth grade, and then found myself offered an 8th grade science position. Now I am hooked on this age group! When I'm not in the classroom, I like to travel, read, watch true crime shows, and cross stitch. I have 2 children, Shaelyn who is 27 and studying in Massachusetts and Rowan, 18, who just graduated in May. We have 1 cat (Harley) and 2 dogs (Bonnie and Sundae). We will learn so much about Science and the world around us this year. In 8th grade we focus on cells and heredity, the environment around us, our climate and weather, the universe, physics, and chemistry. We will also be preparing our students for the next steps in their lives-high school. We have high expectations for our students. Students are held to a higher standard in the areas of responsibility, accountability, being respectful and being safe academically and behaviorally to get ready for that big leap which is high school. It has always been important to me to build relationships with my students. I believe that you have to build that to teach a student, you must first capture their hearts before capturing their minds. I hope we have an amazing year this year and that my students thrive.
