FIRST Lego League Teams Earn Top Honors at Regional Championship

July 27, 2021 - Three teams from Comal ISD elementary campuses earned top honors at the FIRST Lego League Alamo Area Regional Championship tournament this year.

The Johnson Ranch Elementary Coded Bombs took first place for its innovative project with this year’s FIRST Lego League RePLAY theme which challenged participants to create innovative solutions relating to health, sports and fitness, motivating people to play and move within their communities. The JRES Coded Bombs developed a solution for working parents who struggle to find a balance between active living and family time, designing and proposing a multi-sport family league.

Members of the JRES Coded Bombs included Owen Hakes, Kaden Overstreet, Braden Hoelscher, Philip Martin and Ryan Vendetti. This team was coached by Michelle Wibracht and Shannon Carr.

Additionally, the Hoffmann Lane Elementary Hiking Foxes and the Clear Spring Elementary Cyber Stallions took home second and third place honors, respectively, for demonstrating the FIRST Lego League’s Core Values which include discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun.

Members of the HLES Hiking Foxes included Charlie Burrus, Hayes Davis, Clark Frisbie, Samuel Holtman, Colton McGinnis, Georgia Schexnayder and Morgan Trump. The Hiking Foxes team was coached by Mindi Wing and Sheri Wersterfer.

Members of the CSES Cyber Stallions included Julian Barrera, Anne Dunn, Ariel Erwin, Isaac Gillespie, Avery Lane, Ella Murphy, Annabella Nail and Oswaldo Plascencia. This team was coached by Rachel Grubbs and Crystal Barrera.

With 13 teams from the district advancing to the regional championship, Comal ISD was well-represented among the 60 participating teams. The additional teams which advanced included the Mighty Mavericks from Arlon Seay Elementary, the Chewie and Yoda teams from Bill Brown Elementary, the Panthers 1 from Church Hill Middle, Canyon Robotics from Canyon Middle, Kentucky Fried Pigeons from Danville Middle, Mind Mechanics from JRES, the Wolves from Morningside Elementary, Duckstruction from Mountain Valley Middle and Ocelot Robotics from Oak Creek Elementary.
