District Earns Art Distinction for Second Year

For the second year in a row, the Comal Independent School District is being named a District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA). Quite an honor, since this is only the second year of the statewide award.

This places Comal ISD among 18 districts to receive the honor two years in a row. The distinction recognizing districts with outstanding leadership in promoting the arts throughout their district and community. This year, 42 districts are receiving the honor while 20 received it last year.

“Our art teachers have once more exhibited fabulous leadership by offering more opportunities to showcase our students’ talents through competitions and in galleries,” said Carla Schumann, the district’s director of fine arts. “These additional opportunities enhance our program, and we are proud to be named once more a District of Distinction.”

With 46 art teachers in elementary, middle and high school campuses, 15,170 students participate in art classes throughout Comal ISD. Elementary campuses have their own art instructors with weekly lessons while middle and high school campuses offer a variety of courses including drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics, jewelry, art history and advanced placement studio art. In addition, student organizations such as the National Art Honor Society and art clubs are available on high school campuses.

This distinction further confirms the district’s continual efforts to provide students with opportunities to pursue their passions and showcase their talents.

Annually, student artwork is displayed in art shows on campuses and at the district office as well as the New Braunfels Art League Gallery, Dia de Los Muertos Art Show, Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), Austin Rodeo Art contest, Comal County Fair Art Show, Youth Art Month, Art on 12 Art Gallery in Wimberly, the New Braunfels Public Library and many more.

Congratulations!
